Chapter Eighteen
Sunday afternoon
Smithy hadnât seen Bailey since the wedding, but he looked different, and it took a moment for him to figure out what it was. He beamed, he was relaxed and he radiated pure joy. Basically being in love suited him completely. It reminded him of how his dad had looked when heâd first introduced Smithy to his soon to be wife Vanessa. Except with Bailey he didnât have the same churning feeling in his gut.
Good.
Smithy couldnât help but grin at Bailey as he sat down, his plate piled high with an assortment of food from the buffet, noting that on the top were some hot wings.
Mya burped. âSorry,â she said continuing to slowly sip a Bellini.
Polly was next to get to the table and her plate was a smaller version of Baileyâs and again wings were predominantly placed. Smithy laughed as they held up their wings and cheers-ed each other.
âHowâs your mum getting on, Bailey?â Smithy asked. Baileyâs mum had looked good at Sophie and Marcusâ wedding, even doing a little singing with Polly despite going through treatment for cancer at the same time.
âSheâs doing well. Sheâs finished her last round of treatment and itâs all looking good. Sheâs keeping the wigs though.â
Mya nodded. âShe looked amazing in the purple one.â
âGlad sheâs doing better, pal,â Smithy said, relieved because he had a soft spot for Baileyâs mum who had always made Smithy feel welcome whenever she saw him.
Mya let out another little burp and groaned.
âOh no are you not feeling so good?â Polly asked.
âIâm just done with food for a minute or two, but donât worry, Iâll still get my five a day in.â She raised her glass.
Smithy ate his own food while Polly filled them in on L.A.
âSo when he invited us over, at first I assumed it was a wind up, then Sophie checked it out for me and confirmed it was legit, then the next thing I know, Iâm freaking out on a plane more nervous than I have ever been before and then I was in his office. Apparently theyâll get in touch. But Iâm assuming that means they wonât right? Honestly Iâm not too fussed. Either way they paid for the flights and the short stay in LA. We just moved our return flight back a bit and diverted here so we could surprise you.â
Smithy watched as Bailey leaned into her and kissed her hair. âI donât know babe, I still think something might come of it.â
Grinning at their loveliness, he looked down at Mya.
She was rubbing her belly and hiccupping with a wince, the wet glow of sweat still not quite disappeared.
âSo I have to ask? What are you going to do with two million if you win?â Bailey said eagerly.
âWhat would you do if you won two mill?â Smithy asked back.
âI donât know. Polly, what do we need? What would we do with two million?â
Smithy paused. He hadnât expected that. He should have, but he hadnât factored in Baileyâs decision-making as a couple as opposed to on his own.
